Self Portrait Of A Primate
Hackatao’s Cryptograph is a GIF that displays a portrait of an Orangutan drawn in their distinctive style, with the words ‘SAVE ME’ superimposed on top of it. The outline of the orangutans head is filled with beautifully intricate drawings that are so precise they seem almost carved in metal. The artwork is aptly named ‘Self-Portrait of a Primate’ as its intent is to draw attention to the severely endangered species, by showing the viewer just how closely related we are to orangutans. Orangutans today have faced almost an 80% loss of their natural habitat in Indonesia and Malaysia and their numbers are declining rapidly. Hackatao’s Cryptograph will help support the Orangutan Outreach organization whose mission is to protect orangutans in their native forests and to provide care for orphaned and displaced orangutans.
Hackatao
Hackatao are a well-known artistic duo who formed in Milan in 2007. Their crypto art is incredibly popular and they have been involved in the movement from the very early days. Their work often explores the big issues present in today’s world from society to technology to the environment. Their art is full of symbolism as well as references to art history and psychology. Their unmistakable style usually consists of a visually dense tattoo and graffiti like series of drawings mixed in with stark quotations. Their work is popular because it is instantly recognisable and yet contains many layers to it which demand closer analysis. Their paintings and sculptures have been widely exhibited and they are particularly loved by art collectors in the digital community.
